S.T.U.DS Club

Students Teaching Uniform Decisions (S.T.U.Ds) is an energetic group of Lake of the Woods High School students who are passionate about setting good examples and encouraging their friends and peers to make safe, healthy choices! That doesn’t mean they don’t like to have fun! Since the beginning of the school year, the S.T.U.Ds club has hosted two activity nights at the Lake of the Woods School, launched a trivia contest on LWPCstory.org and organized a Stocking Hunt before the Holidays!  Their mission is to strive to influence our peers to make healthy and safe decisions in regard to the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  The club is a part of the Lake of the Woods County Prevention Coalition and meets regularly during Activity Period (AP), has officers and follows Roberts Rule of Order.  Here’s a bit more information about the S.T.U.Ds Initiative:

Membership:  Any student enrolled in Lake of the Woods School in grades 7-12 is eligible to join the S.T.U.Ds club.  Each member must sign a pledge to live their high school years without using alcohol, tobacco or other illegal drugs.  They also pledge to support their peers who are choosing not to use, and encourage their peers who are struggling with this choice to refrain from using.   Membership Info click here.

Activity Nights:  The S.T.U.Ds Club organizes these nights at the school so that all Lake of the Woods County 7-12th graders have a fun, safe place to hang out with their friends.  The evening includes activities such as floor hockey tournaments, dodge ball, sumo wrestling and sumo basketball, Wii games, ping pong, food, games and more!

Leadership Training: Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) is a high-energy, interactive workshop designed to help students learn effective ways to reduce alcohol and drug use in their community and enhance leadership skills.  Over 120 youth from all areas of Minnesota, including nine Lake of the Woods Students, attended YLA in October of 2012 in Brainerd, MN.

Role Models:  Club members have visited with elementary students about the importance of being alcohol, tobacco and drug free.

Trivia Contest:  All teenagers in Lake of the Woods County are invited to visit LWPCstory.org to play the trivia contest and win weekly prizes.  Students need to answer two trivia questions correctly to have their name put into a drawing to win.  Prizes include gift certificates to area businesses, Bears wear, electronics and more!

Video Contest:  Members of the S.T.U.Ds Club will soon be participating in a video contest that will showcase recent Lake of the Woods Student Survey* findings that indicate most Lake of the Woods teens are making healthy decisions and most are choosing NOT to use alcohol and other drugs.

The S.T.U.Ds Club is funded through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division.  For more information on S.T.U.Ds or to become a member, please contact Lake of the Wood County Prevention Coalition (LWPC) Coordinator, Tammie Doebler or LWPC Support Specialist Joyce Washburn.  They can be reached at the Lake of the Woods School, 218-634-2510, ext. 1100.
